To celebrate Academic Medicine’s recently redesigned cover with greater space to showcase art from the academic medicine community, we have launched our first call for the Cover Art feature!
Submissions will be evaluated by a panel of experts in art and medicine, including artist Maria Hupfield (https://mariahupfield.wordpress.com/), Academic Medicine Assistant Editor Dr. Arno Kumagai, and FRAHME initiative contributor Dr. Vidya B. Viswanathanwe.
For our first call, we are seeking original works of art that should be inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient.
The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media.
High-resolution TIFF files with a minimum of 300 dpi resolution are required at the time of submission. Images should be 9” x 8” or 1260 x 1084 pixels. If an image is not 9” x 8,” it may be cropped at the editor’s discretion to fit the cover specifications. Image files must be grayscale or CMYK. Submissions do not require an abstract.
Artists must also submit a related artist’s statement of no more than 250 words as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.”
The completed AAMC Artist Consent Form is required to be uploaded as part of your submission. We will provide a $100 licensing fee to each artist for publishing the selected artwork.
You will be able to submit entries at www.editorialmanager.com/academicmedicine. Sign into your author account (or create a new author account if you do not have one) to start a new submission using “Cover Art” as the article type. Submissions must be received between 9AM ET on Monday, May 3, 2021, and 5PM ET Friday, July 30, 2021. Submissions received after the deadline will be disqualified.
Accepted Cover Art will be published in Academic Medicine throughout 2022.

Thank you for helping for us make the Cover Art feature such an integral part of the journal since the feature launched in 2008. We have enjoyed all of your art over the years and cannot wait to see your new submissions!
